Trick or treat? You know I always prefer a treat. And you also know we've got plenty of treats at our Wine & Words stores, especially on this beautiful Halloween day. In the liquid department we've got Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Wychwood's Hobgoblin Ale (the Hobgoblin says, "What's the matter, Lager Boy? Afraid you might taste something?") and the much less scary J.K. Scrumpy's Hard Cider. Or treat yourself to one of our addictive Berkshire Bark chocolates (we've gotten customer complaints that we shouldn't be allowed to sell something so good).

Talk about bargains! I ordered a new supply of this one for our Feature just to make sure the price hadn't gone up like everything else. Nope. Still $8.50 a bottle from the makers of the stellar Tres Picos Garnacha that wins awards every year and sells for around $20. I've said it before…I love Garnacha (the grape that originated in Spain and was appropriated by the French, who call it Grenache). It's soft and grape-y and very easy to drink.

I'm reading a book about coffee and I'm finding there's a lot to learn. But it's fun. Just like learning about wine, there's geography and geology, botany and chemistry. And, just like wine, it all results in a tasty beverage with pleasant psychoactive qualities. We like Counter Culture because, as they say on their website, they're "Coffee Driven."
We also serve Counter Culture in our Back Bay Cafe.

The beat goes on with the worldwide financial, what..."meltdown," "shake out," "correction?" I can't keep up with it any more. I'm reading a couple of books on economics and policy issues that I took home from the "Words" part of our store. Trying to give myself some perspective. We've got a number of such books on history, policy, etc. Buy something intelligent for the policy maven in your family and you still have time to read it yourself before the holidays. My family has a long tradition of giving each other "ABR" ("already been read") books as gifts. Keeps the discussion going.
